Durability of coating protective systems in steel structures

The latest revision of the ISO 12944 standards indicates four durability ranges until the first maintenance is required:

Those protective systems that meet the requirements of this international standard are designed to offer a specific durability in a particular environment. The standard considers that first maintenance with coatings for corrosion protection reasons will be carried out when the degradation of the protective system achieves 10% of deterioration in the Ri3 classification according to ISO 4628-3.

Durability and guarantee of a coating system qualified by ISO 12944 must be identified and properly understood.

Corrosion environments

Corrosion is defined as the degradation of a metallic material due to the reaction with a specific environment. Corrosion cannot be stopped but can be controlled. One of the most versatile control methods in different environments are coatings. The ISO 12944-2 environment classification standard defines the categories of different atmospheric and immersion corrosion environments according to the annual loss of thickness of the base material to be protected.

In its latest revision, a change in the definition of atmospheric corrosion environments was made simplifying the C5 I and C5M environment to only C5 and adding a more severe environment, CX.

The definition of categories of atmospheric environments from the standard latest revision is as follows:

The specific corrosive environment in a coating project system must be identified and properly understood according to ISO 12944.
